It took only nine minutes to address business at the City Council meeting Monday. There was a unanimous vote on the garbage contract that will take effect Jan. 1.
Mayor Lee Posey will appoint a committee to find ways to increase recycling after the first of the year. There will be recycling dumpsters at the public works area on Mill Street for residents to use during regular City hours. Posey said there will be additional time on weekends because the microbrewery will be open, giving access to the dumpsters.
The council passed resolutions reappointing Bill Allen and Dan Simmons to the Natchitoches Parish Port Commission representing the City.
The council approved the appointment of Steven M. Oxenhandler as an assistant district attorney. City Attorney Ronald Corkern said the practice of law has become specialized and Oxenhandler has assisted the City for several years on labor and employment issues. He is with the firm of Gold, Weems, Bruser, Sues & Rundell in Alexandria. According to the City’s Home Rule Charter, the City can only be represented by the district attorney or assistant district attorney. Thus, Corkern requested that Oxenhandler be named an assistant district attorney.
Because Christmas Eve is Monday, Dec. 24, there will be no council meeting that day.
The next scheduled council meeting will be Monday, Jan. 14. City offices will close Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
