Henry R. “Hank” Mangum III, 70, of St. Augustine, Fla., passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at Flagler Hospital with his family by his side. He was born in Raleigh, N.C., Dec. 3, 1948, the son of the late Lt. Col. Henry R. Mangum Jr. and Viola “Boe” Alston Mangum.

He was a graduate of Sewanee Military Academy and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1972. Following a successful career as a financial controller, he retired from DuPont in 2001. After retirement, Hank loved finding bicycles at yard sales, fixing them up and donating to organizations or giving to needy families. For 10 years, he was a tireless and selfless volunteer at SAFE Pet Rescue, fostering rescue dogs, transporting thousands of animals to safety from euthanasia, building fences and helping the organization in many other ways. He was an avid reader, golfer and had a passion for food. He was a kind and gentle person who always had a smile on his face.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Zettie Carrier Mangum; two sons, Hank Mangum (Susan) of Newburgh, Ind., and Cary Mangum (Emily) of Natchitoches; three grandsons, Andrew, Brent and William Mangum of Newburgh; two granddaughters, Callie and Maisie Mangum of Natchitoches; and two sisters, Laura Mangum Coleman of Hixson, Tenn., and Frances Mangum Hensel of North Ridgeville, Ohio.
