Teens take their lives at Ware Youth Center

Ware Youth Center Executive Director Joey Cox released a statement Feb. 11 concerning two deaths within 72 hours at the facility located just north of Coushatta in Red River Parish. The two males took their own lives according to the release.

“As is customary to any incident of this nature, it is currently under investigation by the authorities. Our thoughts and prayers are with both of these young men and their families and friends during this difficult time,” Cox said in the release.

Troy Murray, PIO officer with the Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office said, “I can only confirm that the RRPSO is investigating two possible suicides that occurred last week at Ware Youth Center (a 17 year old male and a 13 year old male).”

In a report by Vickie Welborn with KTBS Channel 3 news, it stated “Both teens were sent to Ware following their arrests in Bossier Parish, which is among the parishes who use Ware because they do not have a juvenile detention center.”

The report further stated “The 17-year-old, who had recently moved to Bossier Parish from Colorado, had been arrested after he got involved in an argument with a friend in his front yard after being accused of stealing money. The 13-year-old, whose birthday was Jan. 20, was detained early this month on a charge of simple arson.”

The deaths were both reportedly hanging by use of bedsheets.
