Host North Texas struck for five of its six runs in one inning Sunday as Northwestern State suffered a 6-0 loss to finish the Mean Green Classic.
The Lady Demons (2-6) skirted trouble in the early innings and trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth inning, but North Texas plated all five of its runs with two outs.
The Mean Green (8-1) put runners on second and third base with no outs, but NSU starter Mikayla Brown recorded two outs with no harm.
North Texas broke through with a Katie Clark two-RBI double, a Harley Perella RBI single and a Hanna Rebar two-RBI double to score those five runs.
In her first start of the season, Brown (0-1) allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks.
“Mikayla looked good in her first start of the season – she had just one bad pitch in the fourth inning,” said NSU coach Donald Pickett. “We’re still looking for consistency offensively, and we have to do a better job of driving in runs when we get runners on the bases.”
NSU relievers E.C. Delafield and Samantha Guile combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings on two hits. Delafield entered the game and surrendered the Rebar two-RBI double with both runs being credit to Brown.
The Lady Demons mustered just two hits on offense, both off North Texas starter Jenna Goodrich. Goodrich pitched three scoreless innings and reliever Hope Trautwein (4-0) pitched four hitless innings.
Sophomore Cayla Jones singled in the first inning and Codi Vernace singled in the second inning.
NSU’s best chance to score came in the first inning as junior Kaitlyn St. Clair walked ahead of Jones’ single, but Goodrich stranded those two runners in scoring position.
The Lady Demons left six runners on base, four in scoring position.
NSU returns to Natchitoches for its home opener Tuesday against Fairleigh Dickinson before hosting the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission Lady Demon Classic this coming weekend.
