CAPA on the Cane set for March 23

The School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern State University will present CAPA on the Cane on Saturday March 23 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the Downtown Riverfront stage in Natchitoches. Admission is free.

NSU students will present art along with music and dance performances in conjunction with the Annual Bloomin’ on the Bricks event.

From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., art students will exhibit works at the NSU Art Maker’s Faire on Front Street, NSU Dance will perform on the Riverbank stage at 11 a.m. followed by the NSU Jazz Orchestra at noon. The Jazz Orchestra will play works by Duke Ellington, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, local musician Luke Brouillette and more.

Musical theatre students will be on stage at 1 p.m.

The NSU Men’s Chorus will perform at 2 p.m. followed by the NSU Tap Dance Rep at 3 p.m.

The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Pops Concert at 4 p.m. Douglas Bakenhus is music director of the orchestra and Juan Pablo Paternina Paez is the graduate assistant conductor. The concert will feature alumnus Brett Andrews on cello. The orchestra will perform “The Star Wars Epic” and “The Cowboys Overture” by John Williams, “The William Tell Overture” by G. Rossini, “Crouching Tiger Concerto” by Tan Dun, music from “The Gladiator” by Hans Zimmer and arranged by Watson, the Intermezzo from “Cavaleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni and “007: Through the Years” arranged by Stephen Bulla. The music from “Cavalleria Rusticana” was used in “The Godfather III” and “Raging Bull.” “007: Through the Years” will include the James Bond Theme along with music from “Goldfinger,” “Nobody Does It Better,” “Skyfall” and “Live and Let Die.”

The Jazz Orchestra is conducted by Galindo Rodriguez. Michael Rorex conducts the Men’s Chorus. The musical theatre students are taught by Grace Edgar and Pia Wyatt.

Choreography is by Kirstin Riehl, Brett Alan Garfinkel and Rebecca Morgan.
