JT sees where some members of the Parish Council are claiming a victory in their fight over the selection of a new Parish Registrar of Voters. The Attorney General’s office has rendered an opinion saying the Parish Council….not the Parish President…has the appointing authority. The AG letter also told the Council how to do it and avoid a veto from Parish President Rick Nowlin whose nominee for the job, Linda Vance, was voted down in December. JT sure hopes the council moves fast because we will have a huge election in the Fall and the office is already down one employee because of the retirement of the Registrar Debbie Waskom.

JT read in the Baton Rouge newspaper not long ago about the resurgence of drilling in the Hayneville Shale. It appears activity has been picking up for the past year or so. New drilling techniques to get the natural gas and an uptick in prices are spurring an increase in drilling in the DeSoto, Red River, Sabine and Natchitoches Parish areas. JT hears quite a few leases have been acquired in Northern Natchitoches Parish. The impact of the renewed interest in the Haynesville Shale will have a positive ripple effect on our area economy.

Speaking of our neighboring parish to the northwest…Is it DeSoto or Desoto?. JT got some mail the other day from two different agencies in the parish and each one had it different. One had a capital S and the other a lowercase s. Just wondering?

Many of JT’s readers may be a little young to remember the show “The Six Million Dollar Man.” He was a bionic engineered human who had amazing talents and super powers. Well….JT hears we’ve someone close to that with the recently approved $4 million contract for LSU football Coach Ed Orgeron. In 2017, LSU football made a $55 million profit. JT found it interesting that the Shreveport newspaper ran a big headline that said “Is LSU’s Coach O Worth $4M?” The answer depends upon whom you ask. But as one avid fan told JT, “He’s worth $4M as long as he’s winning. When he’s not winning, he ain’t worth a dime.”
