DALLAS—The Northwestern State Lady Demon tennis team’s seven-match winning streak came to an end with a 7-0 loss to SMU Sunday at the SMU Tennis Complex.
“By and large, I was not happy with our performance today,” head coach Patric DuBois said. “Allowing SMU to dictate in most matches and a large number of unforced errors will get you the result we had today.”
With the defeat, NSU (13-3) has concluded non-conference action.
Freshman Maria Skyba took the first set from Vivienne Kulicke 6-4 before dropping a tough second set 6-4 and the pro-set 10-5. She was the only member of the Lady Demons to win a set on the day.
“I was happy about the process from Maria Skyba today who played a very good match,” DuBois said. “We need Maria to continue to have a good process.”
In doubles, the Lady Demons dropped two of the three to lose the point. Both Antonia Blattner/Ela Iwaniuk and Patrycja Polanska/Rhea Verma fell 6-1 to Ana Perez-Lopez/Sarai Monarrez Yesaki  and Liza Buss/Vivienne Kulicke, respectively.
Polanska and Iwaniuk at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, fought valiantly, but both lost 6-3 in the first set and decisively 6-1 in the second.
Blattner fell at No. 5 6-2, 6-0 to Katherine Jakeway before Verma lost 6-2, 6-2 to Anzhelika Shapovalova at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Mustangs.
Judit Castillo Gargallo was beaten by Tiffany Hollebeck at No. 6 6-2, 6-2, before Kulicke’s win against Skyba rounded out the sweep.
This is the second straight victory for SMU (6-9) after losing six straight. It was the first of two matches for the Mustangs.
The Lady Demons return to Natchitoches to face McNeese Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a visit from Southeastern Louisiana next Sunday at 11 a.m.
“We plan to have a great week of practice and prepare for a tough conference weekend at home against McNeese and Southeastern Louisiana,” DuBois said.
