Northwestern State men’s basketball coach Mike McConathy continued the trend of adding length in this spring’s signing class with the addition of the 6-foot-6 forward Gatdoar Kueth, the program announced Monday.
Kueth, a junior college transfer from Southwestern Community College (Iowa), is NSU’s fifth signee of the spring recruiting period. Four of five NSU signees stand at least 6-foot-5.
The Des Moines, Iowa, native averaged 12 points and five rebounds as a sophomore.
“We are very excited to add a player of (Kueth’s) passion to Demon basketball — he’s a gym rat,” said McConathy, who is gearing up for his 21st season in NSU purple. “This is a Southwestern program that won the national title in 2017 and placed third at the NJCAA National Tournament in 2018.
“He’s shown his ability to play at a high level in the very competitive Iowa junior college league.”
Kueth proved to be an efficient scorer, shooting 57 and 53 percent, respectively, from the field in his two seasons. He can also shoot from the perimeter, making 30 and 34 percent of his 3-pointers, respectively.
Nicknamed “Gat,” he averaged 10 points and four rebounds as a freshman en route to a first-team all-region selection.
He helped Southwestern to a 29-8 record and third-place national finish.
“Gat has been blessed to play for coaches Blake Peterson and D.J. Jenkins, who have instilled winning into their team culture,” McConathy said of the two-time academic all-region pick. “He has a team-first attitude accompanied by his desire to win through preparation every day.
“His skill set allows him to do a lot of things within our system. He’s a great ball handler for his size that can get to the rim and shoot well off the catch. He has the ability to rebound and start our fast break, and his length and athleticism allow him to guard multiple positions. He has a high basketball IQ to go with his great feel for the game.”
Kueth joins Greek forward Robert Chougkaz, Israeli swingman Jovan Zelenbaba, guard Jairus Roberson and post Jamaure Gregg in the signing class.
