Northwestern State University will hold the 62nd annual Miss Northwestern – Lady of the Bracelet Scholarship Program Friday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. in the Treen Auditorium at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts. Admission is free but donations will be accepted for the Children’s Miracle Network. The event is sponsored by the University Programming Council at NSU.
Eight candidates will compete in the scholarship program, which is a preliminary for the Miss Louisiana Competition. The candidates are Avery Debelak of Shreveport, Mary Gaffney of Metairie, Ashley Henry and Victoria Hickman of Slidell, Madeline Hensley of Anacoco, Kanica Irchirl of Natchitoches, Gabrielle Mockerman of Bossier City and Sarah Shiflett of Covington.
The winner will receive more than $8,000 in scholarships and prizes.
Debelak is a freshman biology major. She is a member of Phi Mu Fraternity. Her social impact initiative topic is brain cancer awareness.
Gaffney is a junior English major. She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi. Gaffney’s social impact initiative topic is “The Rights of Transgender People to Live Just Like You and I Do.”
Henry is a junior dance major. She is a member of the Demon Dazzlers where she is co-captain, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Henry is a Dean’s List student. Her social impact initiative topic is “Mental Health: Empowerment with Self-Love – Loving the Skin You’re In.”
Hensley is a sophomore health and exercise science major. Her social impact initiative topic is autism awareness. Hensley is a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, the Student Government Association, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Demon Volunteers in Progress. She is a NSU Social Media Ambassador and was a freshman orientation leader.
Hickman is a freshman musical theatre major. Her social impact initiative topic is the prevention of cruelty to animals. She is a member of the NSU Creative and Performing Arts Organization.
Irchirl is a junior business administration major. She is an honor roll student. Irchirl’s social impact initiative topic is promoting financial literacy in young people.
Mockerman is a freshman health and exercise science major. She is a member of Helping Hands, the Brainy Acts Poetry Society, Open Homecoming Committee and the Student Theatre Organization. Mockerman’s social impact initiative topic is “Unity Through Diversity.”
Shiflett is a junior nursing major. She is a member of Phi Mu Fraternity. Shiflett’s social impact initiative topic is Mental Health Acceptance.
