This morning at 4:12 a.m. Natchitoches Parish FD9 was dispatched to the 2300 block of Hwy 71 for a reported log truck over turned with entrapment and diesel leaking. Units were on scene in less than 3 minutes to find the driver still trapped in the vehicle. It took D9 members approximately 20 minutes to free the subject.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office.
FD9 remained on scene for several more hours assisting with clean up.
LSP Troop E
Troopers responded to the crash around 4:10 a.m., which occurred on U.S. Hwy 71, north of Campti. The crash involved a 2005 Peterbilt (18-wheeler), driven by Michael G. Routon, 59, of Olla.
The Peterbilt was northbound on U.S. Hwy 71 when Routon lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the vehicle collided with a ditch embankment before colliding with several trees and overturning.
Routon was wearing his seat belt, but was pronounced dead. Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
Troop E Troopers have investigated 33 fatal crashes in 2019, resulting in 37 fatalities.
