A Natchitoches Times Editorial

Sen. Louie Bernard

VOTE for Louie Bernard

End a 24-year gap in representation, elect a local resident to Senate Dist. 31

Natchitoches voters have the opportunity to do something that hasn’t happened in nearly 25 years…. elect a local resident as the Senator for District 31.

That’s why this newspaper is asking you to vote for Louie Bernard as the next District 31 Senator. He’s someone who grew up in Natchitoches Parish, attended our schools, served in our parish government and has a distinguished record of both public and community services. It’s been over two decades since Sen.

Don Kelly ended his service to our area. Natchitoches Parish has been without a Senator from here since then. At that time we had one Senator and one State Representative from Natchitoches Parish representing us in Baton Rouge. The last 24 years, a Winnfield man has had the seat. Since then, Natchitoches Parish has been carved up into two Senatorial Districts and twice that many House of Representative Districts. We are about to face another reapportionment, which means without someone from here looking out for the best interest of the parish, we could be split up even more.

It’s critical to the future of this parish that we elect someone who lives here, knows our parish history, understands our needs and will fight for our concerns. Bernard knows how government works, having served our parish for 16 as purchasing agent, assistant secretary-treasurer and administrator for the Natchitoches Parish Police Jury. He had a distinguished tenure as Natchitoches Parish Clerk of Court and served that organization on a statewide capacity with two terms as President of the Clerk of Court Association. It’s clear when you look at the candidate’s accomplishments, service and experience; Louie Bernard is the right person to represent us.

We can’t stress the importance of this election enough. We’ve seen what can happen when the people representing us don’t live here. Please get out and vote Saturday, Oct. 12.

Vote Louie Bernard as State Senator for District 31.
