Young mother paving the way for a better life

Shunterika Fields is a resident of Pleasant Hill, a global ambassador and a proud 2019 Southern University (at Shreveport) graduate. She has recently been accepted into an Introduction to Clinical Pathology Basic Science of Infectious Disease Medical Internship that will take place in Iquitos, Peru, in the Amazon Jungle, Dec. 10-16.

I am the first student to attend this internship from North Louisiana. Along with this honor, I have also been accepted as the first and only African American female to attend a Masters of Virology Course in June of 2020 in Germany. Both programs are under Dr. Lane Rolling MD, one of the best surgeons in the country, my mentor and the CEO and director of Clinical Education and Research for the TPaIDA organization in Cuzco, Peru.

On a personal note, I currently serve my country in the United States Army National Guard and am a junior at Northwestern State University obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Sciences. As a young girl growing up in a poor rural north Louisiana community this opportunity is truly something that you lie in bed at night and dream of.
