Natchitoches native Demetric Brown of the West Central Basketball Association was named 2019 Outstanding Referee for the state Jan. 8 at the La. High School Officials Association meeting at Anacoco High School.
“I went to school at Natchitoches Central High School where I played basketball all four years. I graduated in 2001. I became a referee because I wanted to stay around the game I love and I felt like it was something I could be good at,” Brown said. “I’ve been officiating basketball since 2008, so about 12 years.”
He officiates at high schools in Vernon, Sabine and Beauregard Parishes. In 2015, he was hired to officiate women’s college basketball and worked his way up to the Division II level with Division I an ultimate goal.
Brown has been married almost six years “to the beautiful” Ruth Chatman Brown. “Her love and support along with our children are what allow me to put in the time and work to become the best official that I can,” he said.
He attributes his success to God, his family, hard work and making “Doing the right thing” his habit.
