The Lakeview Lady Gators began district play Tuesday, Jan. 21 when they battled the Many Lady Tigers. The game began as a back and forth battle and stayed this way the entirety of the bout.  Tigers took control of the boards early, as many of their points came as second chances in the first quarter.

The Lady Gators first points came from #35 Elizabeth Poydras, who had two free throws at two different trips to the line. The next point came from a steal and fast break from #3 Janaiya Fisher. Fisher, the teams point guard, is only in seventh grade but can read passing lanes like a seasoned vet and has been doing it all season long.

After this, Poydras’ older sister, #33 Zenobia, made a free throw of her own. The Tigers countered with back to back jump shots, and their next points would be back to back threes. The older sister of Janaiya, #24 Jameisha, made an and 1 bucket and hit a jump shot at the buzzer to close the gap 16-18 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter began with a long jumper from #2 Cartina Reliford. The next six Gator points came from “Little Fisher.” The young guard scored 10 of Lakeview’s 15 points in the second quarter, keeping the score close come halftime, with the Lady Gators only trailing by two.  Neither team led by more than four till there was 3:27 remaining in the game. Many was leading 56-52 when they made four straight free throws to push their lead again. #3 took control of the game once again, scoring after an offensive board and weaving through the lane for a layup in consecutive possessions, shrinking the lead to four with 1:12 remaining.

Many was fouled and made one free throw at the line to lead by five, but then Janaiya Fisher became clutch at the line, making both pair after being fouled hard on a shot, giving the Tigers just a three point lead with 28 seconds remaining.

The Gators stopped the Tigers on this next possession, and passed the rock to #4 Timberly Washington, who made a layup to make it a one point game. The Tigers found their way to the line yet again though, and pushed the lead to three with six seconds remaining. Lakeview wasn’t able to sink a shot at the buzzer, losing a heartbreaker with a final of 63-60.

#3 Janaiya Fisher scored 27 points

The Lady Gators are ranked 21st in Class 2A, and the loss gives them a record of 8-7. Janaiya Fisher scored 27 of the teams 60 points, and clearly led the team in scoring. Come out next Friday when the Lady Gators take on rival Red River in a vengeance game against the #2 team in the state.
