The Natchitoches varsity boys’ basketball team was triumphant against the Captain Shreve Gators. They brought home the victory in overtime, 62-61, after blowing a 17-point lead Friday evening at Natchitoches Central High School.
After winning a close one, the Chiefs advanced to 19-2. Central is now the number 2 team in in the state and 6-1 at home. The Chiefs are on a 5-game win streak and is now 6-0 in district.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chiefs dominated the first half offensively and defensively leading at halftime with a score of 37-20.
In the second half the Gators defense stepped up, forcing the Chiefs to take tough shots and making them turn the ball over almost every other possession. In the third quarter they outscored the Chiefs 12-3 and in the fourth quarter 18-10. After four quarters both teams were tied at 50 going into overtime. In the first overtime each team only scored a single basket, forcing a second overtime. The Chiefs then outscored the Gators 10-9.
The Chiefs finished with 33 rebounds (20 defensive/ 13 offensive). Shooting 42% from the field, while shooting 65% from the free throw line. Defensively they held the Gators to shooting 41% from the field and forced 16 turnovers.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
The Chiefs had four players in double figures.
Devonta Snow led all players with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals while shooting 89% from the free throw line. He also shot 38% from the field (6-16). Darius Young had a double double for a total of 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also came up big in clutch moments knocking down three pointers when needed. Jaiden Haire had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks making his presence known defensively. Nathan Curtis had 11 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds.
Natchitoches Central played host to the Parkway Panthers Jan. 28. Then Jan. 31st they will host the Airline Vikings at 5:30 p.m.
