Lakeview fishing team qualifies for national championship

Lakeview students Kain Custis and Jake Baldridge with boat captain Matt Stewart earned a spot at the national championship this summer, during the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Series on Toledo Bend Jan. 26. Custis and Baldridge brought in a five fish limit weighing 12.13 pounds placing 11th in a tournament of 174 teams from 12 states in a one-day event. The top 17 teams earned berths to the national championship.

Lakeview students Rebecca Gallien and Evan Baker also competed with David Gallien as their boat captain.

First place, Maverick Winford and Ian Ratliff of Atascocita, Texas weighed in at 18. 4 pounds. While second place, Matthew and Christopher Kahrs was the talk of the tournament reeling in a bass that weighed 10 pounds.

The top 12 teams split a cash prize of $6,600 to benefit their high school fishing teams. Custis and Baldridge had already earned a state championship berth earlier in the season, and placed first in another tournament at Toledo Bend.

The Toledo Bend Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster tournament was the first of four regular season stops scheduled in the 2020 Bassmaster High School Series. Additional tournaments in the high school series will be at Smith Lake in Alabama March 1 and Cumberland Lake in Kentucky May 9.

Another high school event is scheduled for June 20. The annual three-day national championship time and location is undisclosed.
