The Saint Mary’s varsity baseball and softball teams hosted their first pitch banquet Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Knight’s of Columbus hall. The banquet was the main fundraiser for both programs for this upcoming season. There was a silent auction, as well as a live auction, for several items.

Two of the most highly bid items were the Whiskey pairing and dinner sponsored by Maison Louisiane and a four-day Mexico dove hunt sponsored by Wide Open Outfitters. The event was well attended and catered by Maison Louisiane.

A large senior class of softball players will be on the diamond for Coach Steven Wren and they have high hopes of returning to Sulphur this season. That, of course, will depend on the regular season outcome where they will be a strong contender for District Champions. This group of young ladies has been playing together at the varsity level since eighth grade.

Baseball team members are, on front row from left, Russ Hillhouse, Jeffrey Townson, Logan Watson, Jace Miley, Coach Brooks McMinn, Noah Heard, William Broadway and Tate Nelson. On back row are Kolton Norsworthy, Adam Parker, Evan Gandy, Andrew Godfrey, Dylan Veuleman, Patrick Vienne, Jordan White, Graeme Fidelak, Triston Mitchell and Karson Eversull.

The baseball team returns most of their talent from last year and their ability to be a contender will be focused on some quality arms on the mound.

Their first home game will be Feb. 27 versus Anacoco at 7:45 p.m. A season preview for both squads will be in a future edition.
