The Lesche Club of Natchitoches is now accepting entries for their annual Fine Arts Contest. All high school students in the parish are encouraged to submit an entry.
Entries must be original work limited to drawings, paintings, photography and graphic arts. Entry forms can be obtained from parish schools’ art teachers or fine arts faulty; in addition, parish libraries have entry forms. The deadline for submission for this year’s competition is March 16 by 3 p.m. Students can submit their work to their school’s art teacher or another designated teacher/leader, or bring to the Natchitoches Parish Library in Natchitoches or the Northeast Branch in Campti.
The Lesche Club was organized in 1894 by Miss Agnes Morris, who taught at what is now NSU. The purpose of the Lesche Club was (and is) to “promote culture, to preserve local traditions and Louisiana folklore, and to foster the spirit of altruistic effort among the members and throughout the community.” This long tradition makes it the oldest women’s club in Louisiana. Fifty members meet monthly at the Lemee House for refreshments and to listen to musical presentations and speakers on local culture.
In its earliest days, competitions were hosted for creative writing to encourage students and citizens to express themselves artistically and to widen public appreciation of creativity. Beginning in 2004, the focus of the competition changed to creativity in the visual arts; the competition invited submissions from Natchitoches Parish high school students. This visual arts competition continues to this day. Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 are awarded to first, second and third place winners. Winners are selected based upon creativity, skill and originality by votes from the Lesche Club membership.
Lesche Club members will have a showing of all submissions at their April meeting and vote on their favorites. Monetary prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners. In May, the Lesche Club will celebrate winners, their parents, their teachers and mentors at the Lemee House.
