Grace Maggio was born July 14, 1925. As a graduate of St. Mary’s in Natchitoches, she always wanted to be a nun. She knew she would enter the convent as soon as she graduated from high school, but fate intervened as World War II became a reality. With her two older brothers and three brothers-in-law in service, and another brother working at a defense plant, she became the caretaker of her younger siblings and widowed father, Papa.  She attended Northwestern State College of Louisiana and graduated in 1947.

After the war, Grace joined the Order of the Sisters of Divine Providence in San Antonio, Texas. As Sister Ann Carmel, she became a nun and worked for many years as a science teacher in Oklahoma.  She eventually moved back to San Antonio where she was a medical technologist at Nix Hospital.  Family members were able to celebrate both her 25th and 50th anniversary of becoming a nun.  Sister Ann later moved to the Sisters of Divine Providence retirement home at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, where she lived out her gentle life and was loved by all there.

Sister Ann Carmel, or Grace as she was called by her family, left this world July 4, 2020. This happened to coincide with the date of her mother, Carmelite’s, passing 84 years earlier.  Others preceding her in death are her father, Sam Maggio (Papa); sisters, Rosalie Fulco, Jeanette Gunter, Mary Thompson Willis; and brothers, Anthony (Ned) Maggio, Joe Maggio and Charles (Charlie) Maggio.

She is survived by and affectionately remembered by her other siblings, Sadie Dark, Theresa Janes, Henry “Buddy” Maggio and wife Nita, and John Maggio and wife Billie; as well as her many relatives who simply knew her as Aunt Grace.

Burial will be in the Sisters of Divine Providence Cemetery on the campus of Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio. The family will host a memorial service at a later time.

Sister Ann, Aunt Grace, we will love and miss you always, the Sam and Carmelite Maggio family.
