DeAndre Benton has been named head boys’ basketball coach at St. Mary’s. He is a native of Longview, Texas, and a graduate of Longview High School. Benton was the junior high head boys’ basketball coach and varsity boys’ assistant coach at Covenant School Dallas in Dallas prior to his hiring at St. Mary’s.

Benton earned his Bachelor of Science degree with concentration in kinesiology/physical education from Dallas Baptist University. He was president of the Kinesiology Club in 2016-17 school year and volunteered in international conversation and Mission Arlington. Outside of DBU, Benton interned with Grand Prairie ISD, Turning Point Christian Academy in Desoto, Texas, Batter’s Cave of Arlington, Dallas Thunder Homeschool Basketball Organization, Texas Alliance of Christian Athletes Homeschool Basketball Organization and Triumph Sports Christian Camps.

At the Dallas Thunder organization, he was assistant head boys basketball coach under the great late Doyle Moncrief. Benton also had the chance of a lifetime to learn from the brother of Doyle, NBA Hall of Famer Sidney Moncrief. Benton won his first State championship in the homeschool arena with the Dallas Thunder organization.

That same season, he served as head coach of the National All-Star game that took place at Missouri State University. Texas Alliance of Christian Athletes was another great place for Benton as he led the first year junior varsity team to a district championship as well as serving as assistant head basketball coach to Coach Moncrief. Benton went on to coach at Covenant School Dallas where he went 12-2 his first season and 11-3 the following year winning district and JH Coach of the Year.

Benton enjoys coaching, watching baseball, reading and spending time with his niece. Benton inherits a team that lost ULM commit Thomas Howell and others to graduation, but the team has some young returning talent he will be able to work with.

As with all sports currently, the jury is out on what the future may look like if and when we return to athletic competition. One thing is sure though, Coach Benton looks forward to the opportunity to coach at St. Mary’s.
