Reception, swearing in event puts first female, as well as first African-American, in office as Councilman at Large.

Betty Sawyer Smith hosted friends, family and supporters at a reception at Merci Beaucoup Tuesday. Smith is the first woman, and African American, to be elected councilwoman-at-large on the Natchitoches City Council.

“I’m so elated,” Smith said. “This is a historic moment. I worked hard because it was something I wanted to do for my city and the people of Natchitoches.” Clerk of Court David Stamey, at right, administered the oath of office. Smith will attend her first meeting as councilwoman-at-large July 27.

Smith referred to the song by James Brown, “It’s a Man’s World” saying, “But it can’t be nothing without a woman.” Elton Wade was master of ceremonies, Diedre Johnson sang a musical selection and Andrew Cofield played a trumpet solo.

Mayor Lee Posey, left, and Councilman Dale Nielson, along with Councilman Eddie Harrington, not shown, presented a bouquet of flowers to incoming Councilwoman at Large Betty Sawyer Smith.
