Voters will be going to the polls Aug. 15 to renew the millage tax for consolidated District 7 in Natchitoches Parish. The schools affected by this tax are Lakeview Jr./Sr. High School, Fairview Alpha Elementary School and Goldonna Elem./Jr. High School.
Upkeep of school grounds and facilities, maintenance and repairs, activity buses and sports programs are just a few of the areas impacted by the money collected from the millage tax. A millage is the tax rate approved by your local taxing authorities.
It is used to calculate your ad valorem taxes. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of taxable property value. If you qualify for Homestead Exemption at this time, you are exempt from this tax. With the current millage of 7 mills, the revenue of the tax is not meeting expenditures of upkeep and maintenance for the three campuses.
The increase to a millage of 12 will provide additional funding to make sure we can keep our facilities functioning at their best. The current millage rate has been in effect for 50 years at the same rate.
