Saint Mary’s cross-country team competed in District competition recently and took home top honors. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams were crowned District Champions and several individuals garnered accolades in the process. Jensen Parker led the pack as the individual girls’ district champion.
Maggie Wheat was the girls meet individual runner up. For the boys, Mason McCart emerged as the individual runner up. The team will next compete in the State meet at NSU Nov. 16. The last several years have been a quagmire as cold rainy weather mares the competition. Last year was freezing cold and rain had the course looking more like a four-wheeler trail in the middle of deer season. As such, many times were off by as much as a minute or more for individual personal bests.
The long-range forecast predicts partly cloudy skies and moderate temperatures for the event and the 3.1-mile course will hopefully be dry.
Saint Mary’s cross-country coach Gracie Hubley is proud of the team and their accomplishment but knows that the season is not over and hopes the best is yet to come for them. On the district championship she said, “The team has been putting in some hard work, and I’m really proud of how they performed at district. I can’t wait to see how we do at state on Nov. 16.”
Parker is looking to improve on last year’s State meet performance and improve her time of 22:18 and a #15 finish. The senior will close out her stellar career at the State cross-country meet before transitioning to track and field. The girls will also hope to improve their #9 place finish from last year.
