Three students have been selected as Students of the Year to represent St. Mary’s School in the annual Louisiana state awards competition for non-public schools. Representing St. Mary’s are Fisher York, elementary, son of Aaron and Chrissie York; Georgia Kate Philen, junior high, daughter of Jamie and Lacey Philen; and Ben Smiley, senior, son of Brad and Janna Smiley.

Representing St. Mary’s School in the Louisiana State Student of the Year Awards Program are Fisher York, elementary; Georgia Kate, junior high; and Ben Smiley, senior. The three students, who were chosen on the basis of leadership, citizenship, and academic achievement, will now go on to compete in the regional competition.

The Student of the Year Awards Program recognizes outstanding students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of leadership, citizenship, and academic achievement. The program recognizes one student in the Fifth, Eighth and 12th grades as Students of the Year in the elementary, junior high, and high school categories.

“These three students have demonstrated superior accomplishments in all three areas and will go on to represent St. Mary’s in the regional round of competition,” said Andrea Harrell, SMS principal. “We are very proud of them.”

The Louisiana Department of Education and the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education sponsor this annual program, which starts at the school level, then goes on to the regional level, and finally the state.
