A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph C. Balthazar Jr. will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Natchez with Father Charles Ray officiating. Interment will follow at St. Augustine Catholic Church Mausoleum in Natchez. The family will receive friends from 9-10 a.m. Jan. 14 at the church with a Holy Rosary at 10 a.m.

Joseph Conrage Balthazar Jr., 87, passed away Jan. 3, 2021. Joseph was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Melrose Joseph “Conrage” and Mary LaCour Balthazar.

He grew up on Cane River and attended St. Matthew High School which is now a historical landmark.  He proudly served in the United States Army from 1954-56.

He married the love of his life, Nora Lee “Boonie” Roque, of Natchitoches June 28, 1958, and to this union they had two children, Joey and Angie.  Shortly thereafter, they moved to New Orleans where they resided until Hurricane Katrina.  Later, they retired and moved back home to Cane River.

He worked at Kolb’s Restaurant in New Orleans and retired after 38 years.  He was a great son, brother, loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather. Birthdays, holidays and any special occasion the family was always together.

Left to cherish his memory are his children-Joseph “Joey” C. Balthazar III. and wife Jean and Angela Balthazar Vaughn and husband Leon K. Vaughn; grandsons, Paul Balthazar, Leon K. Vaughn II. (Courtney) and Austin B. Vaughn (Sarah); great-granddaughters, Thamerin Balthazar and Livie Marie Vaughn; brother, Herbert “Bo” Rachal; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Bernstine, and Theresa Norman; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph “Conrage” and Mary L.  Balthazar; sisters, Zenobia “ToTo” LaCour and husband Earnest LaCour and Maxine Flournoy and husband Leon Flournoy Sr.; brother, John “Will” Rachal; sisters-in-law, Annie Mae Bernestine, Jesweater Metoyer, Loretta Roque and Linda Rachal; brothers-in-law, Gerard Bernestine, Albert Bernestine and Joseph L. Roque Sr.
