St. Mary’s powerlifters qualify for state

Saint Mary’s powerlifting team qualifies for State On Saturday, the boys and girls competed in regional competition for central Louisiana at Pineville High School. On the line was an opportunity to qualify for a berth in the State Meet in Monroe at Fant Ewing Coliseum on the campus of ULM March 18-20.

The entire team qualified and will be traveling to ULM to compete in their respective weight classes in Division V.

Gunner Nash was the Central Regional Champion in the 114.5 weight class. He posted a 600-pound total consisting of a 135 pound bench press, 225 pound squat and a 240 pound deadlift.

Jace Miley was fifth at the regional in the 275.5 weight class with a 440 pound squat, 265 pound bench and 440 pound deadlift for a total of 1,145 pounds.

The team consists of Jace Miley, Cole Fisher, Will DeVargas, Kolton Norsworthy, CJ Smith, Logan Watson, Gunner Nash, Ian Gardner, Mason Mathis, Anna Kate Jackson, Chloe Nash and Sarah Thibodaux.

Junior Anna Kate Jackson has a good chance of placing on the podium entering the State Championship competition. She was on the podium at regionals in third place with a total of 640 pounds. That consisted of a 245 pound squat, 125 pound bench and 280 pound deadlift.

Coach Stephen York thinks Fisher, Norsworthy, Miley, Nash and Jackson all are solid contenders for podium finishes. Having the entire team qualify for State might be a first ever for Saint Mary’s. York remarked, “It is great to see this team get rewarded for their hard work in the weight room.”
