After Cloutierville closed, District 6 became a non functioning school district. The tax payers there only pay their constitutionally mandated taxes. Outside of that they do not pay any tax to support a school. Their students still attend Provencal and NCHS but their tax dollars do not follow. This puts a strain on Provencal’s BRE and NCHS.
The suggestion we are proposing is to combine District 6, 8 and 10 into one district. We would like to hold 3 town halls to discuss these proposals. The town hall dates and locations are listed below. We will be holding a town hall in Cloutierville and will announce that date soon!
Town Hall Meetings
- Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. at Provencal Gym
- Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. at Marthaville Gym
- Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. at New Birth Baptist Church in Natchez
- Cloutierville Town Hall – TBA
As an incentive to consolidate these 3 areas we are proposing the creation of a 3rd high school in the area that would serve Cloutierville, Provencal, and Marthaville. The school would be a 2A school with full programmatic offerings. We would consider sites either on HWY 6 (where we currently don’t own land) or on water well road where we do own land. The idea is to find the most centrally located piece of land for all three areas.
We invite public input on this process, which includes both district consolidation and the new high school.
- It would fulfill what the original desegregation order entailed but never came to fruition b/c an agreement had never been met
- It would lessen the strain on NCHS
- It would address our loss of students that happens every year from Provencal, Marthaville and Cloutierville
- We lost 1.4 million in MFP this year but over the past decade we have lost over 1,000 students, leading to losses close to 6 million dollars. This is a measure to reverse this trend. We lose students to Many, Desoto, Red River, St Mary’s, and other private options. The vast majority cite a desire to go to a smaller high school.
- This would allow for this district to operate like District 7 and 9, multiple Elementary’s/Jr Highs feeding a single high school.
