Dear Editor,

The six finalists for the position of President of Northwestern State University will be in town next week for interviews. I thought your readers might be interested in the qualifications of one of the candidates, Dr. Marcus Jones. NSU is fortunate to have a candidate of the caliber of Dr. Marcus Jones applying for the position of President. Students are the heart of any university and Dr. Jones has repeatedly demonstrated his dedication to them. Even in his current position he still teaches classes each semester to stay connected with the students.

Seamless Gutters

Although his demonstrative commitment to students is inspiring, it is his extensive experience at all levels of higher education, especially his sixteen years in Higher Education administration, that makes him particularly suited for the role of President. Dr. Jones joined the NSU faculty in 1999 as an Assistant Professor and quickly rose through the ranks in the College of Business becoming Associate Professor in 2005 and Full Professor in 2007. During this time, he taught courses in Business Law, International Business, and Microeconomics; served on multiple departmental and university committees; and published widely in such nationally and internationally journals as the Journal of International Management and Studies, European Journal of Management, and International Journal of Business Research, as well as others.

In 2007 he was appointed NSU’s Vice President of University Affairs where he served as a key administrator in the planning, operation, and management of the university. In 2017 he was promoted to the position of Executive Vice President for University and Business Affairs. His exceptional administrative abilities were recognized and in 2020 he was asked to join the staff of the University of Louisiana System (ULS) in Baton Rouge as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer. In this capacity he oversaw the finances and operational functions of the system and implemented business operations in the areas of administration, international relations, and system policy for the nine universities of the ULS.

One of his tasks was to coordinate the COVID response for the universities including the proper use of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds. Then in July 2021 Dr. Jones was appointed Interim President of NSU.

There will be no learning curve for Marcus Jones as President at NSU. As Interim President he is already doing the job – and doing it exceptionally well. In the few short months that Dr. Jones has served as Interim President, he has proven his ability. With his dedication to students, faculty, and the larger Northwestern community and his years of administrative experience, Dr. Jones is posed to move NSU forward at an ever-accelerating rate. His qualification makes him the obvious choice to become the 20th President of Northwestern State University.

Sincerely,

Kathleen M. Byrd, PhD
