It was a week to remember for Natchitoches Central; the beginning of winter break for the students and faculty, football receiving three players and a coach in the I-20 Bowl, and two straight wins in the early season for boys basketball.
The Chiefs defeated Anacoco 49-38. With victories in Grace Christian and Anancoco, NCHS stands at 5-3 for the season before District 1-5A play. In NCHS’ 68-53 win over Grace Christian, Chiefs senior power forward Devin Helaire scored 22 points on offense and three steals on defense. Shooting guard Dalyn Davis also notched 10 points and four steals.
The Chiefs left Anancoco with a 49-38 victory and earned their 5-3 overall record. Davis came through again with 23 points and eight rebounds, Helaire with 11 points and seven rebounds. Producing young and successful athletes has been a story seen since their two state championship crowns were established; NCHS alumni Brandon Rachal gained the opportunity to play for the Brooklyn Nets and Brian White playing for Northwestern State, to name a few.
District 1-5A games start in January, that’s when the real test of fortunes will be established for the Chiefs. NCHS is back in the TeePee, facing Red River Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
