Heating assistance totals top $48,000 in February

The Office of Community Services (OCS) that operates under Parish Government provided 2022 Crisis Heating Assistance households/families totaling $48,050 according to the February report submitted by Executive Director Sharon Harris.
The heating assistance served 11 households/families, 168 people and 56 new clients who received assistance for the first time.

The office also provided 2022 Crisis Utility Assistance to four households totaling $1,213; and Crisis American Rescue Plan utility assistance to 13 households/families totaling $8,671.
During the Feb. 14 distribution, of USDA Commodities, 90 households/families received food. During the second distribution Feb. 24, 139 households/families received food.
There was a third distribution March 24.
Food for Seniors provided nutritional food items to 146 people 60 or older Feb. 24. There will be another distribution March 24.
Everyone must reapply to continue receiving Food for Seniors.
The Senior Companion Program is a program sponsored by Americorps Seniors. It provides assistance and friendship to older adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks such as shopping or paying bills.
Volunteers keep seniors independent longer and provide respite to family caregivers. In February, there were 36 people who volunteered 2,726 hours at $3 per hour for a total of $8,178. They traveled 3,024 miles and served 40 clients.
