Athletes earn District distinctions

The heat has it feeling like late August and the start of football, but there is still a little closing on the Saint Mary’s Tiger baseball. The Tigers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, but their district accolades continue to roll in. The team won their third consecutive district title, and they were recognized accordingly.
Coach Brooks McMinn was named the district Coach of the Year and his starting shortstop, senior Graeme Fidelak, took home district MVP honors.
Eight members of the team were named to the first team; Fidelak at SS, Payne Williams P, Ethan Busby P, Drake Griffin catcher, Nathan Slaughter third base, Connor Jordan outfield, Ben Bienvenu and Preston Martinez utility.
Second team all-district honors were in order for Mixon Bankston, utility player, and Braylon Norman infield. The season did not end the way these young men wanted but they should be proud of their accomplishments. As goes the seasons, the focus now turns to the end of school and summer conditioning. Before that happens, the annual golf tournament and crawfish boil are right around the corner.
The fundraiser crawfish boil will be May 26 and the golf tournament follows Friday, May 27. The crawfish boil starts at 4 p.m. with tickets costing $50 for all you can eat and drink. Kids are $10 and there will be some fun activities for them including waterslide inflatables.
The golf tournament will be at Northwestern Hills Golf Course and tee time is set for 10 a.m. Contact the school for tickets.
It will not be long before the football team will be putting on the cleats for summertime 7on7 competition and preparation for the upcoming season.
