Just Talkin’ Lagniappe for July 23, 2022

Remember JT telling you COVID was back? Well…apparently it never left.
Reading earlier this week, JT saw that 46 of our 64 parishes were considered high-risk areas. In fact, all of North Louisiana except Winn and Claiborne parishes were considered high risk
JT’s not excited about it…but he sees a mask mandate right around the corner. It’s probably not a bad idea to wear a mask in large crowds.
It’s getting closer…
We are about a month and a half away from Demon Football.
With all the changes in the Southland Conference, some leaving, some joining, and some coming back…they just released an updated schedule.
The only Southland member not on the Demons schedule this year is McNeese. Remember…they were leaving the conference but at the very last minute…asked to come back.
The Demons open on the road against Montana Sept. 3. Their first home game is against Grambling the following week, Sept. 10.
In addition to new conference foe, Texas A&M Commerce, they have added a trip to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Miss, Sept. 17. Southern Miss was formerly in Conference USA but has moved to the Sun-Belt Conference.
The Demons will face an 11 game schedule with five at home and six on the road.
They close the season at home against Incarnate Word, another school that left but is coming back.
As any fan will tell you…we’re optimistic for a good season.
By the way…a Pre Season Poll has the Demons finishing in fifth place behind Southeastern, Incarnate Word, Nicholls and McNeese.
There was still one more day to qualify for local offices…it ended Friday…when JT was going over the list of candidates.
‘There were 48 people who were offering up their time for public service. It just shows the passion Natchitoches Parish folks have for their communities.
As he reviewed the list of candidates, something that did jump out to JT was the large number of candidates who want to unseat State Senator John Kennedy. There were 10 of them and JT doesn’t have a clue who most of them are.
As of Thursday evening, there were five Democrats, two no party candidates, two other party candidates, one independent and Kennedy as the lone Republican.
None of the candidates are from North Louisiana…in fact Bunkie is home of the closest candidate.
It doesn’t take a political science degree to know…someone (party) wants Kennedy gone.
Speaking of voting….be sure and check the Natchitoches Times in early August for the list of inactive voters. We’ll give you a heads up before the list in published.
If your name’s on the list, you’ll want to clear it up with the Registrar of Voters Office so you’ll be able to vote in the next election.
Saturday, July 23 is the last Farmer’s Market until October. The fresh fruits and veggies and homemade goodies will be available from 8 a.m.-noon on the downtown riverbank. Main Street Director Jill Leo said they’ve had a great year with upwards of 40 vendors each weekend. JT will be getting some fresh veggies for his table for sure.
