The Senior Companion Program (SCP) focuses on providing assistance and friendship to older adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks such as shopping or paying bills. Through this program, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers keep seniors independent longer and provide respite to family caregivers. The program offers modest stipends to eligible volunteers to help offset the costs of volunteering. Other benefits include training, accident, personal liability, and excess automobile liability insurance as well as community recognition.
The program is administered through the Office of Community Services. During August, there were 37 SCP volunteers in Natchitoches Parish. They volunteered 2,728 hours at $3.15 per hour for a total of $8,593. They traveled 3,687 miles and served 39 clients.
