Third time is not the charm for Village of Natchez council

Once again the Village of Natchez council did not pass the 2024-2025 proposed budget. Such non-action took place Thursday, Oct. 3, before a packed house of residents. On hand to offer advise on the matter was the Village’s Certified Public Account Steven McKay of Rozier, McKay, and Willis, in Alexandria.

McKay told the council Natchez did not have a significant revenue stream. The Village of Natchez revenue sources are sales tax, franchise tax property tax, law enforcement citations, occupational licenses, building permits and sewer/water fees.

“The future is bleak,” said McKay, “If you don’t make changes to revenues.” He also offered two options—increase utility rates and increase the revenues brought in via law enforcement. McKay further noted the Village’s current water/sewer rates are the lowest in state.
