Kenneth Baber McCaleb, born on March 22, 1946, in Cherry Point, North Carolina joined his beloved son, Gersham, in death on Dec. 23, 2025.
His father, Alfred F. McCaleb, Jr., was a colonel in the Marines, moving the family around from base to base.
Ken grew up in North Carolina, Florida, California, Louisiana, and Virginia.
Ken married Anne Roddy (of East Baton Rouge Parish) and relocated to his family’s plantation, China Grove, in Pointe Coupee Parish. The family eventually settled in Natchitoches, which is where they raised their son, Gersham, who later drowned while trying to save a friend.
Ken is survived by his brother, Alfred, and three sisters, Nancy, Belle and Lyric, along with several nieces and nephews.
Ken spent most of his life farming with a dream of racing horses.
At the ripe age of 75, Ken fulfilled a dream of having a winning horse with Copper Speed Rocket coming in first place in a Quarter Horse race at Louisiana Downs.
Ken, also known as Hippy around town, will be remembered by his kind nature, willingness to help a friend in need, and free spirit.
His family will have a small gathering at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at his son’s burial site in St Maurice at the Methodist Church Cemetery on the corner of Highway 71 and 477.
