Submitted by Diana Dunn On Christmas Eve a likely rare rainbow event was observed during the 5 p.m. hour and at 5:11 p.m. during light rainfall. National Weather Service Cooperative Observer Wiley Butler shared these photos that he received from other weather observers. A rainbow is caused by sunlight
and atmospheric conditions. Light enters a water droplet, slowing down and bending as it goes from air to denser water. The light reflects off the inside of the droplet, separating into its component wavelengths--or colors. When light exits the droplet, it makes a rainbow. Submitted by Mary Beth Fair
