Joseph Wylie (JW) Vercher, 86, of Campti passed from this life on the 31st day of July, 2024 at the Courtyard of Natchitoches, La after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born August 12, 1937 to Ramie and Jane Vercher of Campti, Louisiana.
He was a devoted member of United Baptist Church and leaves a legacy of deep faith, generosity, and a great capacity to love others. He was known for his engaging sense of humor, his love for children, and his old-school work ethic. He never met a stranger that could forget him.
He was self-employed and owned Vercher Roofing Company for 40 years. Over the years he employed many young men from the Campti and Natchitoches communities. He loved hunting deer and squirrels with his dogs. He enjoyed trotline fishing in Red River and tending his many cows.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Norman Vercher, brothers James Robert Ben David Vercher.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ethel Mae Williamson Vercher; his son and daughter-inlaw Sam and Janie Vercher, daughter and son-in-law Becky and Jeff Hancock; his grandchildren Jared Vercher, Ramie Vercher, Andrea Caldwell, Abigail Williams, Bonnie Birdwell, Charlotte Hancock, and Clay Carter; Great grandchildren Boston Beasley, Joseph Thornburg, Emma Birdwell, Ryley Birdwell, Elijah Thornburg, Claire Caldwell, Emori Vercher, Colette Caldwell, Gemma Vercher, Caroline Caldwell, and Tovin Birdwell, Lilly Vercher and Raylan Williams; a brother Kenneth Vercher; and his sister Melba Little.
Visitation will be on Friday Aug. 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Blanchard St. Denis in Natchitoches, and again Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at noon at United Baptist Church located at 7687 LA-9, Campti. Services and a celebration of his life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, Aug. 3, at United Baptist with Bro. Dean Crittenden, Bro. Mike Honzell and Bro. Lindle Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Cooley Bethel Cemetery in Campti, under the direction of Blanchard-St. Denis.
