The Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) Wednesday to establish a Direct Enlistment Lateral Entry Program during a special signing ceremony at SOWELA Technical Community College. Initially formalized solely at SOWELA in April, this USCG Lateral Entry Program will now expand to include all twelve of Louisiana’s community and technical colle ges, creating a comprehensive network of pathways for LCTCS g raduates to serve in the USCG and the United States Coast Guard Reserve (USCGR). The initiative aims to create recruitment opportunities that will help address critical workforce gaps in the USCG.
The LOI outlines the commitment of both organizations to evaluate LCTCS curriculums and certifications, ensuring that qualified candidates are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge for successful careers in maritime education, training, and certification. Graduates meeting the established standards will be eligible for direct enlistment as Petty Of ficer Third Class or Petty Officer Second Class, pending selection by the USCG.
“This partnership is a win-win for both our graduates and the U.S. Coast Guard, said Dr. Chandler LeBoeuf, vice president of education at LCTCS. It not only opens doors for our students to embark on fulfilling careers but also strengthens the Coast Guard with highly trained individuals ready to serve.
