The City introduced an ordinance that calls for starting a gun buy-back program at the City Council meeting Monday.
Mayor Ronnie Williams Jr. said that $25,000 to finance the program will be taken from the City’s American Rescue Replacement Funding (ARPA) that was awarded by the Federal government to provide government services for which there was a shortfall of revenue funding because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Williams said he hoped this different approach would impact crime although the program was just one way of reducing crime. While there were no details in the ordinance about amounts to be paid, it reads that it will become effective immediately upon approval of the ordinance that will be voted on at the Oct. 28 meeting.
