Memorial Day
We just observed it this past Monday— even though it originally was always the last Monday in May. The first national observance of it occurred on May 30, 1868: and was known as “Decoration Day” after John A. Logan, Commander-in-Chief of the “Grand Army of the Republic” ( a fraternal organization of Union veterans) declared it to be a holiday.
