James “Jim” Bryant Wheat, age 73, passed away peacefully at his home in Metairie, LA, on Nov. 1, 2025.

Jim was born on April 15, 1952, in Natchitoches, LA to the late Lloyd F. Wheat and Helen Wheat.

A graduate of Northwestern University, Jim began his professional career as a Certified Public Accountant before following his passion for food and entrepreneurship. He transitioned into the culinary world, first owning and operating a restaurant with his family, later founding Mrs. Wheat’s Foods, a company that grew from humble beginnings into one of the regions most recognized names in Louisiana-style meat pies. Through his vision and dedication, Jim helped make the Meat Pie a beloved part of New Orleans’s food culture.

Jim will be remembered for his strong work ethic, love for family, and genuine kindness that touched everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his children April Wheat, Priscilla West, and Bryant Wheat; his grandchildren Ariella, Christian, Jacob, Alexis, Adriana, Lily and JD; and his siblings Nan Wheat, Linda Wheat, and Dain Wirt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd F. Wheat and Helen Wheat.

Services were held on Friday, Nov. 14, at Celebration Church, 3550 Williams Blvd, Kenner, LA 70065: Family visitation was from 10-11 am.; public visitation was 11 a.m.-12 p.m.; and service was from 12-1 p.m.

Food and refreshments followed the service.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate to share in his life and legacy.
