Donald Ray Nugent, 86, of Austin, Texas, passed away on April 15, 2024.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1938, in Rochelle, Louisiana and grew up in Tullos, Louisiana and Winnfield, Louisiana.
Don graduated in 1956 from Winnfield High School, where he played football for the Winnfield Tigers and from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana in 1960.
Don enjoyed a first career in radio broadcasting, initially with KNOC radio in Natchitoches for over 10 years, and then at stations in Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana. He later worked for Goodyear in East Texas and Natchitoches, then in the banking industry in Natchitoches for nearly 25 years before his retirement in 2008.
Don is survived by his identical twin sons, Mark Nugent of Austin, Texas, and Matthew Nugent of Chattanooga, Tennessee; daughter Amanda Barnett of San Antonio, Texas; daughter-in-law Natalie Nugent of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren William Reeder, Ethan Nugent, Emma Nugent and Erin Nugent. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 55 years, Barbara Standard Nugent, and by his father and mother, Ray Nugent and Lois Bonds Nugent of Shreveport, Louisiana.
Don was a dedicated family man and a hard worker. He was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys (especially under Coach Tom Landry) and the Northwestern State University Demons, and of college football in general.
In his later years, he enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii and the West Coast, and spending time with his grandchildren. After residing in Natchitoches for more than 30 years, he and Barbara relocated in 2010 to Austin to be closer to family and he enjoyed the Texas Hill Country and central Texas for the remainder of his life.
The family will receive visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2024 at Weed-Corley-Fish in Lakeway, Texas. A graveside service is planned for Monday, April 22, 2024, at noon at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park in Austin.
