			<description>Members of the Natchitoches City Council and other community leaders joined students from the Boys &amp; Girls Club of El Camino R/al Jan. 22 to plant a Live Oak tree on the grounds of the newly-constructed Ben Johnson Park in celebration of Arbor Month in Natchitoches. The tree was donated by Northwestern State University. The tree was named "Oakie" by members of the Boys &amp; Girls Club. Arbor Month is celebrated in January in Louisiana. For several consecutive years, Natchitoches has been named as a "Tree City USA."</description>

			<description>The City of Natchitoches, Keep Natchitoches Beautiful, Northwestern State University and the LSU AgCenter sponsored an Arbor Day poster contest for all Natchitoches Parish fifth graders in honor of "Arbor Month" which is celebrated in January in Natchitoches. The theme for the poster contest was "Trees are Terrific." Poster winners were selected and honored at the Jan. 25 Natchitoches City Council meeting. Winners received a certificate from Mayor Wayne McCullen, an educational packet from the LSU AgCenter and an art supply packet from the Northwestern State University Fine + Graphic Arts Department. On front row from left are Josephine Rudd and Mariah Jones from NSU Elementary Lab School; Anne Evans from St. Mary's; Kiasha Williams from Provencal Elementary and Kelsey Shoemaker from Goldonna Elementary. Students completed their unit of study by creating an original ornament for the class "Geome-tree."  Students measured dimensions and calculated the ornaments' surface areas and volumes.  Creative ornaments included Jack-in-the-box, Sponge Bob, polar bear, rocking horse, Santa, reindeer and presents.</description>
