The Middle Ages came alive at St John Baptiste State Historical Site Saturday with the first Renaissance on the Cane. Local and regional members of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) dressed in clothing of the period to recreate skills of the pre-17th century world. Students from the Louisiana School for Math, Science and Arts Junior Classical League chapter were also on hand to help with event
logistics. The event drew some 300 visitors. At left are SCA members in period clothing demonstrating Elizabethan needlework and embroidery characterized by the use of flora and fauna stitches in brightly colored silks. At right are armored medieval knights engaged in hand-to hand combat with swords while on foot.
