Mirlitons are part of Louisiana’s heritage

Like a lot of people who grew up in Louisiana, LSU AgCenter horticulturist Jason Stagg has fond memories of eating casseroles and other dishes his mother prepared using mirlitons — a unique squash that has been grown in the state for generations.

Krewe of the 9 Parade

King Ross Williams and Queen Tan’Keia Palmer were reigning roy alty when the Krewe of the 9 Mardi Gras Parade rolled Feb. 21. The parade followed a route traveling Church Street, Second Street, Texas Street, Fifth Street and returning to Church Street.

Village of Goldonna, School Board adopt agreement on school site

The Natchitoches Parish School Board (NPSB) gave its nod to establishing a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement between NPSB and the Village of Goldonna concerning the grounds and facilities of the former Goldonna Elementary and Junior High. Such action took place during the Feb. 10 school board meeting.

Brush fire at Flora extinguished

On Monday shortly before 1 p.m. Natchitoches Parish Sheriff ’s Deputies and Natchitoches Parish Fire Protection District #4 were on the scene of a grass/brush fire in the 200 block of Felise LaCaze Road near Flora.

Flavor of Louisiana returning to NSU

Flavor of Louisiana, Northwestern State University’s biennial spring seafood festival, will return to Prather Coliseum Friday, March 20.

New fire station groundbreaking is March 3

City officials announced Monday a ground breaking ceremony for Fire Station No. 3 at 3600 University Parkway is being held Tuesday, March 3, at 10 a.m. The project, which has been in the works for several years, was given the nod last fall after some $1.8 million in state funding was secured.

NCHS 1975 planning reunion

The Natchitoches Central High School Bicentennial Class of 1976 will celebrate its 50- year anniversary beginning on Friday evening, May 22, and will progress to a semi formal affair on Saturday evening, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Natchitoches Event Center.
